Middleton, ID June, 2016.  A committee has been formed at the United Methodist Church moving forward with becoming the provider for Valley Regional Transit GoRide system.  This system will provide free transportation for seniors, disabled and veterans to appointments, pick up prescriptions, visiting or shopping for residents of Middleton and the surrounding area.

While the majority of the committee members are members of the church, along with two other members of the community who stepped up and suggested the Mobility Mission name.

David Pederson, Mobility Manager of Valley Regional Transit, has provided much help for the committee.  Members have surveyed other providers of this transportation system in Caldwell, Star, Parma and Fruitland.

The Post was saddened with the passing of Becky O'Meara this past month. Since our founding in 2008, she has been very supportive of our Post. Several members were in attendance at her funeral.

We are sending Braydon Hanson of Middleton and Scott Lake of Star to boys to Boys State which is being held June 5 through 11 at NNU. The participants spend a week forming a mock government. On Friday, they get to sit beside their counterpart at the Capitol.

Saturday, June 11, the Post will be holding a Flag Disposal Ceremony at Middleton Fire Station #2 at Noon. Flags reaching the end of their life may be given to Post members or the Fire Station.

Monday, June 29, the annual Post picnic/meeting will be held at Juniper Ranch south of town at 5:00. If there are triple digit temperatures, as there was last year, then the meeting will be at Sunrise Café.

And on Monday, July 4, The Post will be leading the Middleton Independence Day Parade. The parade theme is Old Glory. At the same time, the Sons of The American Legion Squadron will be leading the Star parade. Should be an interesting day!

Since March 1, the Honor Guard attended 24 funerals conducting Honors ceremonies throughout the valley. In addition, the Color Guard presented the Colors at the Morrison Center for US Army Field Band Jazz Ambassadors and, later, for University of Phoenix Graduation Ceremony. Picture right.

The Color Guard posted the Colors and sold tickets for the game Middleton American Legion Baseball's opening game. There is a schedule of games available. Admission is free for Legion members wearing their caps.

Post handled security and posted the Colors for Broke Down Bunch Street BBQ. Great BBQ, prizes and raffles with proceeds going to Veterans organizations.

The Post officers for the coming year were installed during the May 23rd meeting. David Freeman is the Commander, Jack Youngs is 1st Vice Commander, David Shively is 2nd Vice Commander and Gordon Dunow is Sgt.-At-Arms. Susan Barnett was appointed as Service Officer, Larre` Robertson as Chaplain, Mike Carpenter as Adjutant, Doug Foote and Arnold Burr as Historian, Ira Smith as Honor Guard Commander and Bruce Irving as Finance Officer and Web Master.

Wayne Foster continues as Sons of The American Legion Squadron Commander, Jack Youngs as 2nd Vice Commander, Bruce Irving as Adjutant and John Foster, assisted by Kevin Bundy, as Historian. The next Squadron meeting will be 10:00 AM July 2 at 24037 Old Middleton Rd.

Monday, June 27, the annual Post picnic/meeting will be held (as of this writing) at Juniper Ranch south of town at 5:00. If there are triple digit temperatures, as there was last year, then the meeting will be at Sunrise Café. The Sons of The American Legion (SAL) Squadron will be holding their monthly meeting on July 2 at Dave Freeman’s home at 10:00.
And on Monday, July 4, The Post and SAL Squadron will be leading the Star Independence Day parade. Then we rush back to Middleton for their Parade. Middleton’s parade theme is Old Glory. We originally thought both parades were at noon. Fortunately, we found that the Star parade is at 10:00. Should be an interesting day!
Tuesday, June 7, the twice annual Veterans Fishing Day was held at Juniper Ranch. Veterans are bused from the Veterans Home, Veterans Hospital and other homes. They spend the day fishing with volunteers from the Post, other Veterans Service Organizations and military from Gowen Field Mountain Home assisting them and providing conversation. Following a delicious chili lunch and awards, they returned to their domiciles to rest and enjoyed their memories.
Saturday, June 11, the Post held a Flag Disposal Ceremony at Middleton Fire Station #2 at 10:00. Eight members of the Post took part to honorably dispose of over 100 flags. Flags reaching the end of their life may be given to Post members or the Fire Station for next year’s event.
On Saturday, June 18, the Honor Guard raised the flag and did a three volley salute at the Idaho Chariots Car Show at Boise Outlet Mall. Eleven members took part in this event including Doug Hanks from Meridian Post 113. The Post has been helping Meridian re-establish their Honor Guard and Doug joins us at many of our functions to see how we do them. In addition, the Honor Guard has performed five full military honors at funerals this month
The Old Glory Business flag program is where the Post places flags on businesses for each of the patriotic holidays. More information is available on our web site www.americanlegionmiddletonpost39.org and click on “Programs”. Businesses in Middleton may contact Dave Freeman at 585-2718. Those in Star can contact Marv West at 208 286-9714. Currently, there are over 25 businesses signed up in Star and 9 in Middleton.

Here is what will be in the Valley Times this week. I have also attached the photo that was taken. It doesn't have everyone in it, but I did include the entire Honor Guard that marched.

The Honor Guard was made up of members from The American Legion Middleton Post 39 and a member of the Meridian Post 113. Legion members shown left to right were: Jack Youngs - rifleman, Doug Hanks (Post 113) - POW/MIA Flag, Doug Foote - rifleman, Richard Joswick - ID Flag, Mike Carpenter - rifleman. Not shown in photo: Chuck Hawkins - US Flag, Gordon Dunow -rifleman, Ira Smith - Honor Guard Commander. Post 39 was assisting Eagle Post 127 because the Eagle Post doesn't have an Honor Guard. Post 127 carried WWII Veterans on their truck and trailer that followed directly behind the colors. The Post 39 jeep and trailer followed Post 127.
